Heidelberg, Germany

Sunny with cloudy skies and light rainfall late afternoon

Awoke this morning after a long night of traveling up the Rhine. The ship was vibrating and groaning all night to Frankfurt, Germany.  Frankfurt is a service stop, which means we disembarked and stepped on a bus to travel to the famous city of Heidelberg.

Albert Speer's Home
Traveled thru Heidelberg, up the hillside past Hilter's good friend and architect (Albert Speer) to the Heidelberg Castle.  Albert was put on trial at the Nurnberg trials and committed to life imprisonment. Walked around the castle, traveled back down into town and had lunch.  Spent the remainder of the afternoon, walking around the town.  Heidelberg is where the bicycle was invented, it also has a university located in town.  Mark Twain and others spent time at the university and walking the famous Philosophers' Walk, across the Heidelberg bridge and into the mountainside pondering on the important things of life.

Heidelberg Castle

Never know what you'll get in a box of chocolates.

The Allied troops and Germany had a mutual agreement that if the Germans did not bomb Oxford or Cambridge then the they would not bomb Heidelberg Castle or  the university.  Hence the only damaged structure during WWII was the Heidelberg bridge.

The rain held off until we were able to return to the buses and board our ship again.  Tonight we continue to Wertheim, Germany.
